Composition<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choosing the composition, rather than having the composition choose you. Doing thumbnails and creating a balance (notan) is key to any design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Line Quality<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mark Making<\/li>\n<li>Weight of Line<\/li>\n<li>Selection of Materials<\/li>\n<li>Blind Contour<\/li>\n<li>Contour<\/li>\n<li>Cross Contour<\/li>\n<li>Block out<\/li>\n<li>Reverse Block Out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Perspective<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Background elements that recede<\/li>\n<li>Using one point Perspective<\/li>\n<li>Using 2 Point Perspective<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Tonality<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hatching<\/li>\n<li>Shading<\/li>\n<li>Tinting<\/li>\n<li>Hues<\/li>\n<li>Value as it relates to temperature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. Inspiration<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adopting a master artist<\/li>\n<li>Copying works of masters<\/li>\n<li>Museum visits and collecting material for inspiration<\/li>\n<li>Muse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>After the hour and a half lecture, a break was given and I then went over sketchbooks, welcomed the new students who had not yet been in class &#8211; and prepared them for drawing from the live model.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Before we started drawing, we sat down for our first official critique of the self portraits assignment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4474.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[540]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IMG_4474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4474-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We discussed composition, which seemed to be a major problem for many of the drawings &#8211; technique and style is not something I expect from first-time portraits &#8211; so \u00a0I was lenient. I expect as the class moves forward, the project outcomes and executions will be more astute. For now, I wanted to get \u00a0general idea of the students effort, ability and intention.<\/div>\n<p>We had a great model that gave us 1 -3 minute poses, some under 30 seconds &#8211; all drawn with left hand, then embellished with the right &#8211; on newsprint paper using charcoal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4487.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[540]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-545\" title=\"IMG_4487\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4487-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For some it was the first time using charcoal, or drawing from the model.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4495.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[540]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IMG_4495\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4495-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_4474.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[540]\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I discussed the principles of nature, how it relates to art and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Next week we go to the Museum of Natural History to find objects relating to our unique cultures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavinart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_44711.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[540]\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week the class started with the usual lecture on drawing. 5 major factors in executing a decent work of art were discussed. 1.
