Sir Peter Paul Rubens<\/strong>\u00a0(Dutch pronunciation:\u00a0<\/small>[\u02c8ryb\u0259(n)s]; 28 June 1577 \u2013 30 May 1640), was a\u00a0Flemish Baroque painter, and a proponent of an extravagant\u00a0Baroque\u00a0style that emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality. He is well-known for his\u00a0Counter-Reformation\u00a0altarpieces,\u00a0portraits,\u00a0landscapes, and\u00a0history paintings\u00a0of mythological and allegorical subjects.<\/p>\n

In addition to running a large studio in\u00a0Antwerp\u00a0that produced paintings popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was a classically educatedhumanist scholar, art collector, and diplomat who was\u00a0knighted\u00a0by both\u00a0Philip\u00a0IV, King of Spain, and\u00a0Charles\u00a0I, King of England.<\/p>\n
